Everyone Talks is a short story written by Lee Child and appears in the Anthology No Middle Name.
Her first day on the job, a new detective goes to the hospital to write up a report on a gunshot victim. The victim is sedated so she can’t talk to him.
His passport says he’s Jack Reacher. His only possessions are an ATM card, an expired passport and a folding toothbrush. The hospital had burned his clothes as they deemed them a bio-hazard.
The detective does some research on the victim and finds that he used to be a senior military policeman, but has no listed residence - a drifter. The detective returns after her shift to get his story. His story provides enough information regarding a protection racket run by a man named Kubota to authorize a search warrant. Kubota is located and enough evidence is found to put him away for a long time.
When the new detective returns to the hospital, there is no trace of the drifter and the hospital staff say they had never treated anyone with a gunshot wound.
The new detective returns to the station where she is applauded. A good day.
