The new, revised and cumulated complete edition of the GroĂes Sängerlexikon includes the contents of the 3rd edition (5 volumes and 2 supplementary volumes), arranged alphabetically and enlarged by additional biographies, with the existing biographies up-dated. 2,500 articles have been added and corrections, updates and extensions made. The acknowledged reference work now contains comprehensive biographies from a total of some 18,760 singers. The biographical entries include both the stage name and real name, voice, biographical dates, origin, career domain and most important pieces. They include a short description of the artist?s biographically most important stages, a voice characte...risation and, with well-known persons, references to literature and audio recordings. It is not only the enormous amount of material in the GroĂes Sängerlexikon that is impressive, but also the extent of time span it covers and the many types of singer included: Beginning at the end of the 16th century it illustrates the development of forms of singing which still remain characteristic today -- opera, oratorio, aria, cantata, lied, church coral music -- and yet still remains as up-to-date as possible. Besides biographies of both famous and less known or almost forgotten singers, numerous references to further literature on the subject and to recordings are included, as well as an index of original performances of operas and operettas are included in the appendix.
