Jin (California Institute of Technology), Sugih Jamin (U. of Michigan), Danny Raz of Israel, and Yuval Shavitt (Tel Aviv U.) introduce the research into scalable network infrastructure and network system design, to help address the increasing difficulty of deploying network-wide services and keeping them working as networks grow ever larger. They consider the concept of scalable network services and how various services can be built in a tiered architecture, the design of the IDMaps measurement service for higher-tier services, and an example of how information from that can be used to determine host proximity in the Internet. For case studies of higher-tier service, they cite a caching service within an ISP, and a mirroring service for network context distribution.
