This book is intended as an introduction to theories of public organization for both students of public administration and those outside the field who want to involve themselves in organizations committed to public purposes. The test has been revised and updated to include the latest research findings. It balances treatment of policy studies and action theory/critical theory, and seeks to integrate the two areas; the separation of theory and practice is explored. The book addresses key questions such as how the operations of government agencies and other organizations can proceed more efficiently, how they might be made more public and how they might aid in expressing the values of a democratic society
