"Facework" introduces a new paradigm that identifies facework as the key to communication within the management of difference. Building dignity, honor, and respect is an ongoing accomplishment within the conversations and episodes of group life, in relationships, organizations, communities, nations, and international relations. Facework is an integral part of the process by which we construct meaning through communication. As shown by the numerous cases featured in our book, facework is a central process in the social construction of both identity and community, which has implications, not just for individuals in the immediate situation, but for entire systems and larger networks as well.
