Study of the mass media in Britain and the USA is dominated by an Anglo-American framework. This book seeks to redress this imbalance by looking at the mass media in a European context and exploring the European understanding of the role of the mass media in society. European Media Studiesoffers a student-friendly, authoritative and thematic approach that engages readers with a range of issues in the field, including the structure and context of the press and publishing, broadcasting, film, and music industries in Europe; the practice and performance of journalism across the continent; the strengths and weaknesses of the European and Anglo-American models of journalism; the content of European media, including the reporting of politics and foreign news and the output of the music industry; and the role of the EC in promoting a pan-European identity. The book concludes by assessing the part the media played in the collapse of Communism, examining the rebuilding of the mass media in Europe since 1989 and evaluating the rise of European regional media.
