The Index of European Constitutions closes a long-standing gap in jurisprudence, historical research and political studies. For the first time an index of all the constitutions of Europe, including federal and sub-national states, from the period 1850 to the present, is now available. All current and historical constitutions including their amendments and drafts of constitutions that never came into force are covered. The Index of European Constitutions supplements the microfiche edition Constitutions of the World 1850 to the Present, Part 1: Europe, which is containing the original documents in full text, as an index volume. The Index is arranged alphabetically, using the current English names of countries. Within countries, the constitutional documents, drafts and amendments are presented chronologically. In addition, the volume includes a chronological index, covering all countries. Through the "Index of Sub-national States" it is possible to find all current and historical European sub-national states. A scholarly introduction by the editor, a users guide and a bibliography of sources complete the volume. The titles of the constitutional documents are presented in their original forms with English and German translations. These are followed by the dates of the resolution, commencement and announcement, bibliographic source and reference to the microfiche number. The Index of European Constitutions 1850 to 2003 is a unique reference work on the history and current development of the constitutions of the European states - indispensable for every law, history and social sciences library.
