Der Berliner Antisemitismusstreit 1879--1881 is the most extensive source work on this core issue of research into anti-Semitism, still topical to this very day. It assembles all major texts both published and unpublished. Special attention is paid to the wide range of social reactions to this controversy. In its dimensions, comparable only to the ?Dreyfus Affair? in 19th century France, the ?Anti-Semitism Dispute? was waged on the recent legal emancipation of German Jews, the immigration of so-called ?Eastern Jews? and the accompanying fear of encroaching cultural ?foreignism?. In the end, however, it was all about national identity. The dispute?s main protagonists were Heinrich von ...Treitschke, a Berlin-based professor of history, several well-known German-Jewish publicists and intellectuals, and the classical historian Theodor Mommsen.
