Wayne was born in North Dakota, grew up in Washington state, and earned a PhD in Geography from the University of California at Berkeley; he now resides in nearby Oakland, California, but spends four to five months every year in southern South America, where he owns an apartment in Buenos Aires.
Wayne has taught at Berkeley, George Washington University, the University of California at Santa Cruz and California State University at Hayward. From 1990 to 2000, he dedicated himself to Lonely Planet guidebooks on southern South America, and now covers the same region for Moon Travel Handbooks. He has also published newspaper and magazine pieces on Argentina, Buenos Aires, Uruguay, Chile, Easter Island and the Falkland Islands.
