Little Bear detests his porridge breakfasts and will not eat the stuff no matter what. Mommy Bear even tries sweetening the bowl with berries, honey, and nuts, to no avail. Finally, she begins putting the breakfast on a nearby stump and tells Little Bear that if he doesn't eat his porridge, a fearsome creature named Old Scary Bear will come for it. Every day, someone mysteriously consumes the porridge. After spending hours playing Old Scary Bear games with his cousins, Little Bear has a nightmare and dreams that Old Scary Bear is running after him. He's so upset the next morning that he wolfs down two bowls of porridge, but when he steps outside, he has an unexpected encounter. Daniel Howarth's warm watercolors of the friendly bears in the forest enhance the story.
