Kataki (from the Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Miaz y Trigo) presents eight articles which explore whether rice-wheat production is stagnating or declining in the area comprised of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Nepal, along with possible causes and solutions. After discussing the difficulties of the analysis of productivity rates, contributors look at field and benchmark surveys and tentatively conclude that productivity is declining. Problems identified include reduction of crop diversity, greater crop yields due to commodification of rice and wheat that deplete soil fertility, and inadequate water management practices
