On Parole

Shiro Kikutani is released from jail at the age of 50, where he had been serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife--among other things. Overwhelmed by freedom, he tries desperately to lead a normal life, but is unable to feel remorse for his deeds, a situation that leads to further violence. This existential tale of crime, punishment, and the nature of freedom was critically acclaimed in the author's native Japan.
