This book is a local study of a Jewish community in Poland before theHolocaust. It analyses the development of the Cracow Jewish press, schoolsand cultural organizations to show how Jews expressed their Jewishidentities even as they were increasingly pressured to assimilate toPolish culture. The Jews of Cracow began to develop unique subculturesduring the inter-war period, distinguishable from traditional Jewishculture as well as from Polish culture. Jewish newspapers, schools andcultural organizations promoted separate Jewish identity while advocatingJewish integration into the majority society, and the book shows how Jewsin Poland could acculturate towards Polish culture without sacrificing aseparate sense of communal identity.
