Primary source documents are essential to students, historians, researchers and others who need to access and cite original sources as part of their work. The Historic Documents series makes primary source research easy by presenting in one volume key excerpts from documents relating to the important events of each year for the United States and the world. Each volume includes approximately eighty documents from a particular year, from official or other influential reports and surveys, to speeches from leaders and other opinion makers, to court cases, legislation, and testimony, and much more. Historic Documents also gives background, history, and context to the documents it contains. Each volume begins with an insightful essay that sets the year's events in context, and each document or set of documents begins with an essay that discusses background, history, and context of the event covered and the document chosen. This resource also includes full source citations and Internet URL addresses to direct readers to the complete documents where possible. The documents are tightly edited and arranged chronologically by month. Readers have easy access to material through a detailed table of contents, a new thematic table of contents, and a cumulative five-year index that directs them to related material in earlier volumes. This series will be a welcome addition to collections that serve a wide range of patrons, including those interested in environmental, health, or other public policy; democracy and elections throughout the world; wars and other crises; and a variety of social, political, and humanitarian issues.
